Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
